Chronic Sitting: The New Smoking

We all love the internet, we all spent a lot of time on sitting while doing our work, internet surfing or just chit chat while sitting. Even most of the day, some people are sitting the whole day.

Yeah, we also do the workout when we get time. Spending time in Gyms, dance class, etc.

So, It's OKAY?

The answer is NO.




If your lifestyle is sedentary, you need to be serious about it and should take smart steps.
Actually, our heart and cardiovascular system work better when we stand upright. Our body is designed for regular movement.

Sedentary LifeStyle Health Hazards

According to a 2012 Study from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Around 70% of people spend more than 6 hours each day sitting down.
And the impact of this level of inactivity is grim.

A link between sedentary behaviour and many cancers exist.
  1. Lung Cancer-  Lung cancer risk increases by 54%
  2. Uterine Cancer- risk increases by 66%
  3. Colon Cancer-  risk increases by 30%.
Risk of anxiety and depression is higher in those people who have the sedentary lifestyle.


Posture Problem

Neck and Shoulders

While doing work it's very common to hold neck and head forward. It could give strains to your cervical vertebrae which can lead to strain neck and soreness in Shoulders. It could give permanent imbalances.

Back Problem

One of the major problems people facing nowadays. The reason is simple, sitting puts more pressure on your spine than standing. It will be worse if you are sitting continuously in front of the computer for hours.  
The disk in your back needs to expand and contract. When we move disk gets both expand and contract, which allows it to absorb blood and nutrients.
When you sit, the disk is compressed and can lose flexibility later on.

Organ Damage

Heart

Sitting slows blood flow and muscles burn less fat. It makes it easier for fatty acids to clog your heart.
Researchers show that who sit for 10 hours may have a significant risk of heart diseases.

Pancreas

Just one day of sitting makes pancreas to produce an increased amount of insulin, that may lead to diabetes.

It's true for most of us that sitting in front of the computer is totally unavoidable. Now you need to become smart and take some steps to avoid the disaster.
Never sit for more than 30 mins. It will be your one of the best health investments. Find a way to increase your step counts. 10000 steps daily is really an awesome idea. 
  1. Take the stairs
  2. Walk when taking a phone call
  3. Sometimes watch TV stand up
  4. Park your vehicle bit further from your office.
  5. Set 30 minutes alarm for a stand and stretch.

Be Active Indoor

Yeah, we all have an excuse for the weather to go out of the home. So be active indoors.
There are many options, you could choose any according to your interest.
  • Gym(Focus on Squats, Lunges, Sit-ups and bodyweight training).
  • Dancing
  • Indoor Swimming 
  • Martial arts.
  • Squash
  • Yoga
  • Pilates.

Always Remember...

Moving around is good for you. Not only for your physical health also for mental health.
Sitting for too long increases the risk of a ton of diseases. It affects your whole family. Being active is not hard. There are a lot of simple ways to include physical activity in your daily routine.
Remember CONSISTENCY is the key to success.
