Why do we feel pain after the workout?
We always read this Quote NO PAIN, NO GAIN in gyms. So it's time to discuss it deeply, let us cover the points to understand muscle pain.
Have you ever felt pain when you change your workout routine or someday you did intense training regardless of your fitness level.
Usually, this type of muscles stiffness and soreness is very normal and would recover in days. Actually, it's also a sign of raising fitness level.
So the question is Why we feel it?
A bit technical term, Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
The soreness we feel after a physical workout is known as DOMS. It usually occurs when we change our physical activity like change workout routine in the gym
Myth: DOMS is caused by lactic acid build up
DOMS caused by the lactic acid build is totally a myth and is caused by micro-fractures in the muscle cells.
Another symptom of DOMS is muscle swelling. It is one of the serious effect of DOMS that your muscle looks eventually bigger.
Treatment of DOMS
If you feel pain just after the workout. So it's time to think of it. It pain is so intense, so could consult a doctor. As DOMS usually occurs after 12 to 24 hours of your physical activity.
Below are some treatment to overcome some pain
- Icing: This is one of the traditional and effective ways to handle the muscle pain. Put an ice pack on the injured muscle for 15 to 20 minutes. You could do the same in every 1 hour.
- Tender- Point Acupressure: Research proved that tender point acupuncture relieves muscle pain of DOMS.
- Foam Rolling: Foam rolling is considered one of the treatments for DOMS. One can do foam roller exercises once in a week or 2 weeks. Don't do it for a muscle for more than 3 to 4 minutes. Foam rolling also provides flexibility to the muscles.
Prevention of DOMS
- One of the best prevention of Delayed onset muscle soreness
( DOMS) is to start your new workout gently and slowly. Here you need to give time to your muscles to adapt the new activity, although DOMS are not the terrible things to happen. It indicates that your muscles change and grow faster and you will be stronger. - Do WARM UP, Need to spend your time to warm up your muscles. It prevents muscle injury and also DOMS for some extend.
- Protein Intake: Check your protein intake, if not sufficient, do it correct. The
muscles tissues that involve during the workout require protein for recovery as the protein with all amino acids helps to repair the muscles. Whey protein supplement is one of the best choices for post workout.
Benefits
- No doubt DOMS has more benefits than drawbacks. DOMS also gives you a signal of muscles change and grow faster.
- Our body has a tendency to adapt and the next
time you when you do the same exercise, you will feel less pain. When you do the next time, Your body says "Don't worry, I will protect it". So you will get stronger.

The severe drawback is it could damage your muscle. So severe soreness can decrease your

Believe me, if you are a beginner in the gym or doing the same routine for a long time you have to feel that pain that is beneficial to you. Every successful bodybuilder, sportsperson or athlete has to go through this pain.
Your Ultimate goal is important and will be permanent, pain is just a temporary thing.
